The first mention refers to 1780 under the name of Roguzka Chechel'nyts'ka as a frontier point between Rich Pospolyta and Budzhats'ka horde. Since 1795 it was renamed in honor of the grand-daughter of tsaritsa Catherine II who liked the district during her trip.
