KOROSTEN'

One version of the name origin indicates that city was built from wood, and the walls of the city were surrounded by rough-hewn oak palisade, together with bark, and the city name was Is-koro-sten' ("city from bark on the wall"). According to another legend, the name comes from the pagan sun god Course (Khorse).
Iskorosten' was mentioned in the Chronicle of 945 as the center of the Slavic tribe of drevlyans. In 1589 it received the Magdeburg right. In the 1649-1667 it was part of the Cossack State of Bohdan Khmel'nyts'kyi, but then again came under Poland. In 1795 it was entered into the Russian Empire, but was insignificant village. This changed after 1902 when there was built railroad. Town was renamed in 1917.
In February 12th, 1918, in the city the Small Council has approved the Small State Emblem of Ukraine (the Tryzyb on azure background), now it is evidenced by the memorial stone on the platform of the central railway station.
In 1926 village has received city status.
