The settlement existed in the days of Kyivs'ka Rus'. The origin of the name has come from the Skvyrka river on which the city is situated. In 1616 king Sigizmund II granted the Magdeburg Right. In 1648-1654 it was a squadron city of Bila Tserkva regiment.
