It is known under the Hungarian name "Teycho" (from the German word meaning "German"). It was founded in the middle of XIII century by German colonists. In 1281-1321 it was a settlement of Galyts'ko-Volyns'ke principality. In 1329 with the rights of a royal town it got self-government.
